ZUMBA enthusiasts took part in a gruelling two-hour session to help raise Pounds 10,000 for a hospice - and set a new world- record. Staff at the Douglas Macmillan Hospice, who organised yesterday's event, are hopeful their 'Zumbathon' has smashed the previous record of 1,223 people taking part in the fitness craze.

They will now examine their paperwork to see if the attempt, held at Staffordshire University's Leek Road campus, is enough to beat the current record set by Zumba fans in Texas.

Zumba is a combination of aerobics and Salsa dancing which first started in South America. It arrived in Britain last year. Dougie Mac's fund-raising manager Liz Clarke said: "We're delighted by the amount raised and very grateful for all those who have taken part.

"We'll check through the registration forms to see if we've beaten the record."

The event ran from 11am until 1pm and Zumba enthusiasts were urged on by a team of instructors and Signal One breakf...
