Summary
P RE-SEASON preparation. Running up and down the hills in Hanley Forest Park. Cycling around the Austrian mountains. It's all about building up that basic level of fitness, so that in the 85th minute of a dour nil-nil in February you can still run. When it's raining and the mud is an inch deep, you can make that tackle. When the sun has been beating down for the whole day, you can get on the end of that pass. The work that is done now is the work that can make the difference then, and ultimately at the end of the season.
But it's not just football players that have to prepare themselves for the battles ahead. All of us, at some time in our lives, have to think about what the future holds. We have to do things now that will make a difference then. As the school year came to an end, many of our young people faced exams. The results of those exams will have been affected by the preparation that was done. A workmate of mine, a painter, used to say that the most important part of any paint job was the preparation. You could use the most expensive paint and have the best brushwork in the world, but if you hadn't prepared the surface properly, you were wasting your time. In a letter to the church in Ephesus, Paul wrote about preparation. He said that we have been "created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do".See the full content of this document
