Port Vale.........................................4 Liverpool .........................................3 Vale Park, April 8, 1955 IN THE previous season the Vale had been promoted from Division Three (North) while Liverpool were relegated from Division One, and their first meeting for over 50 years turned out to be an absolute cracker.

The hero of the hour was striker Cyril Done (pronounced Doan), pictured, who scored all four goals for the Vale, the irony being that he was a former Liverpool player who was a member of their 1947 League Championship winning team.
