Universities Urged to Engineer Closer Ties with Industries

Summary

DESIGN company Haughton says more collaboration between education and industry is needed to create the extra skilled engineers the UK economy is "crying out for". David Mills, pictured, managing director of Staffordbased Haughton Design, says his approaches to universities have often been dismissed. But he added that new technical colleges and academies are more willing to engage with industry. Mr Mills, who started his career aged 16 as a technical apprentice with Union Locks, has 29 years' experience in the engineering sector. He said: "Now we have reached rock bottom the Government has finally realised the importance of British engineering and manufacturing."

Haughton specialises in design development for manufacturers in a range of sectors, and says that investing in design can help cut manufacturing costs by up to 90 per cent.
