Summary


Trentham is no ordinary residential suburb. Until quite recently, for example, it was simultaneously home to the former seat of the Dukes of Sutherland and one of the most productive coal mines in Europe. While the record-breaking Hem Heath pit no longer exists, however, Trentham Gardens is enjoying a remarkable renaissance.

After years of decline, the historic leisure park is once again a thriving attraction, combining the natural beauty of the lake, woodland and Italian gardens with a new hotel, garden centre and restaurants, as well as the varied boutiques in the retail village. Families travel hundreds of miles to walk among Trentham's famous colony of Barbary macaques, while many also took the opportunity to see Trentham from above on the giant ferris wheel. While much of Trentham lies within Stoke-on-Trent, parts of it are embraced by the rural boroughs of Stafford and Newcastle.
