THERE was a warning in last night's Hotel Inspector for anyone about to embark on a new life in Switzerland. "When we arrived here we thought everybody was very wonderful and very sweet and very giving and very lovely," said Liz Callis, who, with husband Michael, had taken over a guesthouse in the Alps. "But they're not. We are strangers. We are aliens."

I've often thought that about the Swiss. Unless you're a cowbell connoisseur or seriously into cheese then you've had it over there. To be fair, Liz and Michael had done little to endear themselves to the locals who'd shunned the restaurant at the Hotel du Repos in favour of the altogether better value option over the road. Neither Liz nor Michael appeared to have the entrepreneurial nous to win them back with a small tray of Toblerone triangles on the bar.
