Still a Place for Old Stadium in New Plan ; Letters to the Editor

Summary

WITH reference to the future of Northwood Stadium, I am writing to thank Andrew Heaward, Stoke-on-Trent City Council sports development manager, for attending the recent Hanley One Residents' Association meeting and clarifying the situation in relation to the Sports and Physical Activity Strategy 2009-2016, which is as follows: Whatever the city council and councillors ultimately decide regarding a potential new location for athletics in the city (possibly Fenton Manor) - or not as the case may be as all future options are currently being examined with the best interests of the whole city being the criteria - the Northwood Stadium site will always be retained as a community sports facility in some capacity to meet the needs of the local community; There are no plans to release the land for housing or any other building uses, not least because the abysmal ground conditions preclude this as an option; The current Northwood Stadium running track, which is in good condition and has an estimated life of at least a further five to 10 years, will remain for the duration of its useful lifespan, regardless of whether it is decided that a new more modern athletics venue comes into existence elsewhere in the city.

PAUL BREEZE Chairman, Hanley One Residents' Association SURETY: Alan Myatt's letter in The Sentinel, November 5, 2009 concerning his 'Nightmare vision of a troubled country' seemed to hint that the country may have been Great Britain.
