More than 800 hardened smokers in Stoke-on-Trent are to be targeted to see if they can survive without having a fag for a whole year.

The Government has told city health officials to try to wean 4,000 more people off tobacco for five weeks in the next 12 months. But NHS Stoke-on-Trent wants 20 per cent of them not to smoke for a year.
