MADAM, - I accept that change is inevitable. However, I am not necessarily convinced that change is for the better. I have witnessed the enormous transformation of the city and it has caused some sadness In the late forties and early fifties, school holidays provided an opportunity to visit the Ideal Roller Skating Rink, in Town Road, Hanley. If there was sufficient pocket money left, I could go on to enjoy a couple of hours watching a film at one of the numerous cinemas in the town. The Odeon, The Regent, Capital and The Palace, all competed with the showing of the likes of, Bette Davis, James Mason and Clarke Gable. People queued to escape reality for a short while. The queues were a common site as cinema-goers huddled together to fight off the cold.

I would journey home to the Park Estate in Burslem, where I lived. I remember looking up in wonder at the red sky. Not a natural phenomenon, but the result of The Shelton Iron and Steel Company, opening its vast ovens. A red glow hung like a blanket across the dark sky.
