I AM sixteen and have been in a relationship for a few months. Recently my boyfriend and I decided to have sex for the first time. It was awful for me. I found sex painful and I bled a little which has left me unwilling to have sex again as I'm scared. My boyfriend is sympathetic but he enjoyed our sexual time together - so he can't understand what's up with me.

Having first time sexual intercourse can be a scary and anxious time. It is quite common for women to experience a little pain initially on penetration, which should ease. Some women do report a small bleed straight after first-time sex - this should not happen again, and consult your GP if any further bleeding is experienced or if sex stays painful. Asking your partner to have patience and talking about your fears will help. Spending more time engaging in foreplay will ensure your body is well lubricated and less tense, which should ease the pain. Important note: practise safe sex - use a condom.
