MADAM, - In 1953, I started my teaching career in High Street Boys' School, Tunstall. I spent the next 10 years getting to know High Street and its surrounding streets. The school was later renamed Highgate School.
Being a small town school, it nestled between shops and businesses. Little streets of terrace houses ran off to the left and right, with an occasional allpurpose shop or newsagent. There is an interesting smoke-blackened church and several pot banks. The area looked rather like an L.S. Lowry painting, with many figures moving about their daily tasks. Yesterday I turned into High Street, where the school that I knew so well had been replaced by a supermarket. I knew this had happened but it did not ease the pain. Everything must change, but we are all allowed our own precious yesterdays and for me, High Street Boys' School and High Street remain full of interest and detail.See the full content of this document
