The Rspca has denied having a "hidden agenda" in prosecuting city councillor Paul Shotton for animal cruelty.

The 47-year-old and his wife, Annette, are trying to overturn their conviction for causing unnecessary suffering to their pet Labrador. RSPCA inspector Julie Lyons, who discovered the dog at the Shottons' Fenton home, denied the claim that he was prosecuted because he was a city councillor.
