IT SEEMS incongruous that the Government will happily legislate to allow intervention in varied aspects of people's lives, on issues many would regard as none of the State's business, yet it needs to be poked and prodded on things that really matter.
The thought arises from the petition posted on the Downing Street website, urging the Prime Minister to change the law so that killing someone when driving while disqualified is liable for a charge of manslaughter, rather than causing death by dangerous driving, as at present, which carries a lesser sentence. Though the petition has been launched by someone else, it has been backed by Claire Montford, the partner of Sean Davy, a chef and father-of-one who was killed in an accident caused by the dangerous driving of Ivan Weekes, a banned driver with a history of using his car as a weapon.See the full content of this document
