TEN years ago, on my first trip to Sydney, I was warned not to go to Kings Cross: "Tourists are routinely attacked or robbed; it is ruled by drug barons and pimps; it is a no-go area for local residents, let alone visitors." This was one of Australia's most notorious areas and the warnings were so consistent and firm that I stayed away.
