HOWEVER you dress it up, it was a poor performance by Vale on Saturday. It's not many years ago that we used to raise our game in the FA Cup, but it's been the opposite these last few years. I know Stevenage are a decent nonleague side, but we seemed to be set up too defensively right from the word go considering we were at home. I know we maybe needed Anthony Griffith, but the omission of Louis Dodds meant that the only regular goalscorer in the side was Marc Richards, and he needs service. It looked like a system designed for an away game, so it may yet serve a purpose in the replay.
Once Adam Yates scored - and it was a good strike - we seemed to settle back and let Stevenage have the initiative. Okay, through a combination of good and desperate defending and wasteful finishing, it took them until the 91st minute to score, but it wasn't good to watch and it wasn't the first time a game has ended in that manner this season.See the full content of this document
