Summary

Qwe've recently moved to a house which has a fishpond in the garden, and although I haven't seen any fish swimming about, the previous owners said there were quite a number in there. Apart from feeding the fish, is there anything else we should be doing to care for them during winter?

AOne of the hazards of winter weather when it comes to ponds is the prospect that they could freeze over. If you have a pond, make sure you check it every day. When ponds freeze over, toxic gases can build up in the water which may kill fish or frogs hibernating at the bottom. If it freezes over, place a saucepan of hot water on the surface to melt the ice gently. Never tip boiling water straight on to the pond or attempt to break the ice with a hammer as this can kill any fish. If fish are gulping at the surface of the water it could be a sign they're suffering from oxygen starvation. Their body should not show signs of white spots (a possible parasite) or tufts like cotton wool (a fungal disease). The pond should be cleaned out once a year, though any leaf debris should be cleaned out regularly - even though overhanging trees are important in order to offer a source of shade.
