Any young woman who worked as a figure painter at Royal Doulton in the 1940s knew she was among the elite of her trade.

Most of them were recruited from Burslem School of Art, so even newcomers were far from novices. One ex-paintress told me they even felt superior to Clarice Cliff's famous Bizarre Girls. That lot just got more publicity, she said.
