Personal View: In answer to Mr Massey's letter of Monday June 15 , I anticipated, or rather hoped for, a response to my rebuke; far rather that than apathy. Firstly, my letter was also a personal view, although it certainly reflected other members' feelings. It was not intended as a personal attack - after all, we do not know each other, apart from these columns - but as a response to your negative outlook regarding the aims that our group, and many others, pursue. As to the question "who are City Voices?" your wide cross-section of people appears to be about half a dozen. Maybe you should have asked at Hanley Library, where we are based, or anyone who has been to our three festivals. Or perhaps the Douglas Macmillan hospice, which benefited from our last festival by more than pounds400. Yes, we are a small group, but the remark "perhaps known only to your members" was uncalled for. Incidentally, why would being a writers' group mean that we are divorced from the reality that is Stoke-on-Trent? Our members are also from a wide cross-section of people, and are just as much in touch with the realities of life as anyone else. To end, I am well aware of the meaning of democracy and free speech, and also of the price that has been paid for it. I do not question the right of yourself, or anyone else, to their views, but I reserve the same right to disagree with them.
