New Law Will Mean Increased Wages for Low Paid Workers

Summary

EMPLOYMENT legislation changes due to come into effect next month could hit North Staffordshire firms hard, according to a Newcastle recruitment company. Brampton Recruitment says small businesses in particular will feel the pinch when the minimum wage rises at the beginning of October from Pounds 5.93 per hour for over 21-year- olds to Pounds 6.08. Managing director Claire Thomas said: "In North Staffordshire, where there's a high proportion of low paid workers, this will have a big impact for many local companies. "With a fragile local economy and businesses aiming to be as competitive as possible to win work, this will be an extra financial burden, which all employers must adhere to."

Claire added that the European Union Agency Workers Directive, which is due to come into force on October 1, will affect companies large and small as the recession has lead to many firms opting to bring in temporary workers rather than employ them on permanent contracts.
