ON READING through The Sentinel on July 7, I came across no less than four mentions of new supermarkets in articles: 'supermarket finally opens', about a Morrisons opening in Cheadle, 'store design put on show', about a Sainsbury's in Leek, one in Burslem and a new Marks and Spencer's to open in Freeport, Talke. These places are bleeding local shops dry. They are mostly based out of town so they can only be reached by car, which must make a mockery of the 'cheap food' argument, with the amount of petrol used and the huge carbon footprint this must cause. Also people without cars suffer because local shops are closing down.

Most supermarkets bring cheap food to the consumer by not paying the producers what they should, leaving them out of pocket and with bills to pay for the amount of work they put in. We need Fair Trade in this country too.
