Let's Get Behind Culture Bid

Summary

Get Behind BID: With regard to recent correspondence - largely negative - on the subject of Stoke being the UK City of Culture in 2017, I should like to add the following thoughts.

Stoke-on-Trent as City of Culture 2017? Yes, why not? We have a lot to offer. Admittedly, I don't think many people will come just to admire our architecture or visit our excellent pottery studios, unless their interest is very specific. Outstanding as the City's heritage is, I think it would need some live and lively events to attract a wider audience. We have a wealth of talent - our many excellent choral societies, our impressive amateur dramatic and operatic societies, and our profusion of local bands and groups. We have the Victoria Hall, the Forum Theatre in the Museum, the Regent Theatre, the Mitchell Memorial Theatre (refurbished and re-opened by 2017) and the Repertory Theatre. Professional groups could be induced to come - there are good connections with the great orchestras of the region and London productions who come to perform in the Victoria Hall and the Regent Theatre. We have excellent parks, where fun days and festivals could be put on. There are the canals, too, for boat rallies - the place could be humming for weeks that summer. It will cost some money, but if it catches people's imagination, it will bring in money. But we need to get behind it - let's get a bit fired up, look beyond the rim of our cups, have some faith in our abilities. We can do it for football - why not for 'Culture' in all its forms? Come on, Stokies!
