THE political journey of Stoke-on-Trent city councillor Ellie Walker from the far-right BNP to the left-of-centre Community Voice party is interesting, but perhaps not as surprising as some would claim.

Because of the city's history it's a plain fact that the majority of Potteries residents interested enough in local affairs to stand for election are instinctively leftof-centre, if not socialist in their political outlook. Perhaps of wider interest is that Mrs Walker's denunciation of her former party highlights how the BNP has become yesterday's fad in Stoke-on-Trent politics. From its high of nine city councillors last year, the party is down to five elected members and was thumped at the General Election.
