LIAM Tancock struck a blow for the British men when he claimed the gold medal in the 50m backstroke on the final evening of the World Championships in Rome last night.

The Loughborough swimmer returned to the pool 24 hours after reclaiming his world record from Randall Bal, and managed to lower it again by 0.04 seconds to 24.04. In the process he became the first British man to make a dent in the medal standings after the women had already claimed six.
