TOP of the pops at last year's awards in the Business of the Year stakes was Emma Bridgewater Ltd - a comparative newcomer to the pottery industry finding favour around the globe with an international clientele eager to snap up its wares.

Launched in the mid 1980s the company had gone from strength to strength and, at the time of judging, was employing 160 people and producing more than a million pieces of table and decorative ware per annum. Since then, head count has gone up to almost 200, and annual sales have topped Pounds 8 million. A vociferous supporter of North Staffordshire manufacturing, director Emma Bridgewater said: "Everyone at Emma Bridgewater was so thrilled when we won the Business of the Year Award from The Sentinel, because the award proves that the ceramics industry is alive and kicking.
