AN UNFORTUNATE consequence of economic downturns is that unemployment rises. This recession, like others in the past is no different, so we are told.

With 'only' 2.5 million officially unemployed, we have a way to go to reach depths such as the early 80s. Or do we? Globalisation has outsourced many of the traditional industries, leaving an economy disproportionately dependent on finance and service. What manufacturing remains is relentlessly being pressured by cheap imports, closed down or shipped off to Asia.
