THERE are some questions which have intrigued us since the dawn of humanity. What is out there? How did we get here? Who shot JR? The story of our search for the answers is, says Michael Mosley, pictured above right, the story of science.

"Its achievements," he claims, "are all around us." And few could deny the contribution of the Breville sandwich toaster. "The story of science is often told as a series of eureka moments," said the ex- doctor, referring to Archimedes who reportedly screeched "eureka" when he stepped into a bath and noticed the water rose. Either that or he'd left the hot tap on too long. "But the truth is," continued Mosley, "power and passion, rivalry, and sheer chance have played significant parts." In this first show, Mosley took us back to early eggheads trying to ascertain our place in the cosmos.
