Summary

Modern vehicles have become so reliable and service intervals are so much longer than before. We don't really think about car care these days. We turn the ignition key and the vast majority of times our vehicles start immediately whatever the weather. However, even today's vehicles require professional maintenance to keep them running efficiently. Ensuring that your car is serviced regularly by a professional technician is the best way to avoid all the hassle of a breakdown. Fewer motorists are servicing their own cars these days, having decided that there''s a lot to master under the bonnet. The majority of engines in modern vehicles are screened from view, being covered by plastic. Apart from access for oil and water top- up points, most engines are virtually sealed units and therefore prove almost impossible for the bloke equipped with a screw driver and a little bit of knowledge to access.

Today, just about every motor vehicle is run by a little computer chip known as an ECU (Electronic Control Unit). Engine management and most other systems are all controlled by these ECUs which also manage the ratio of the fuel to air mixture being fed into an engine and therefore with the amount of C02 exhaust emissions produced. The only way to trace faults in these systems is through the use of specialist diagnostic equipment which needs to be operated by a highly-trained technician. While we are all looking at reducing our cost these days it's a false economy to skimp on your vehicle's maintenance. Whether you choose to use the services of a main dealer or independent garage it's vitally important to keep to your vehicle manufacturer's service schedules to ensure reliability now and into the future.
