IT HAS been a year to remember for the Longton National Karate Association. As well as achieving a haul of medals at the European Championships in the Czech Republic, the club's first international event, the talented team were also victorious at the UK Open Championships last month.

Jay De-Winton, aged 11, is now ranked second in Europe in his age group following a fine performance in the Czech Republic, while eight-year-old Mathew Lawrence is ranked in a lofty fifth place. In the team weapons event, Jay, 11-yearold Ricardo Viera and 13-year- old Ben Saville beat their rivals to be crowned the best in Europe.
