G IVEN Stoke-on-Trent's recent political history, it's interesting to sense the excitement in other cities about the prospect of introducing the elected mayoral system. There was excitement here as well, both before and immediately after the electorate voted for the system in 2002, but the honeymoon period was verging on the non-existent.

Six years later the same electorate decided it had got it wrong and reversed the decision in a second referendum. There were a number of reasons - some of them unique to Stoke-on-Trent - why our elected mayors, Mike Wolfe, pictured, and Mark Meredith, failed to win the public over or deliver promises made on the doorstep.
