How long is it since scouts wore shorts, even in the chilliest weather, when they camped at Kibblestone? Around 40 years, according to the records, as long trousers were introduced by the scout movement in 1966, along with berets in place of the broad- brimmed Baden-Powell hats. Scouts of an earlier generation will know that exposing bare legs was part of the camp's spartan regime, which included cooking on open wood fires and sleeping in tents with a couple of blankets. The warmest place at Kibblestone in those days was Camp Fire Hollow, which at weekends echoed to a sing-song round a glowing log fire. The camp's early development owed much to the generosity of North Staffordshire business people, who financed the Copeland Cabin, Dale Shelter, Beech Field, Fox Glen, Breeze Lands and plunge pool, a gift from the Tellwright family. JOHN ABBERLEY, who camped at Kibblestone as a scout, looks back at a boys' paradise.
