IT'S fair to say that hippies find it hard to relax in Blackpool. It's well known that the seaside resort sells less copies of The Guardian than any other British town. Melvyn and Anne, who run a 'spiritual eco B&B' in Glastonbury, were definitely out of their comfort zone staying at Wilf and Pat's guesthouse. They'd never been in a place so devoid of organic sausage.

Melvyn, a man so environmentally friendly that several rare breeds were nesting in his beard, was particularly baffled by the illuminations. "I can't help feeling it's a waste of energy," he said. "Obviously Blackpool hasn't heard about climate change and fuel shortages." If David had his way, the illuminations would consist of a low energy light bulb and three candles.
