NOT since the end of The Italian Job has a coach journey resulted in such a cliff-hanger.

Kick-off had already been delayed until 3.30pm with no sign of the visitors, so exasperated referee Mike Jones said he had to uphold the integrity of the competition and set a 3pm deadline for the York bus to turn up. Would he have gone through with his threat to call the game off if York did not make it? Happily, we never had to find out because, with the clock at 2.58pm and 30 seconds, the bus appeared on the Britannia's grey horizon behind a police escort.
