IT'S fair to say that coalmining in North Staffordshire is not what it was. An industry that once employed thousands, the dark and crumbling bedrock of numerous communities, now lies decimated. In the space of a generation, pits have gone from record-breaking production to heritage pieces.

In the wake of this industrial carnage are left villages with little geographical purpose. Unless new business moves on to the old pit site, they are left wit h few local employment opportunities. The days of stepping out of your front door and into that steel cage are gone.
